  2.  NODC-01 contains over 1.3 million Pacific Ocean                                 
  3.  temperature-depth and salinity-depth profiles taken                             
  4.  between 1900 and 1988.  Most of the profiles were taken                         
  5.  by means of bottle casts and mechanical and expendable                          
  6.  bathythermographs.  A smaller number of observations                            
  7.  were taken using conductivity/salinity-temperature-depth                        
  8.  (C/STD) profilers.  The data were submitted to the NODC                         
  9.  by a wide range of federal, national, and international                         
  10.  institutions (Appendix A on disc).  They represent the                          
  11.  results of hundreds of scientific investigators, millions                       
  12.  of miles of ship tracks, and untold work hours of                               
  13.  collection, analysis, and processing.
